Jim Kernan

Research: I am a biogeographer interested in the relationship between natural disturbances, human activity and vegetated landscapes. My current work focuses on paleo-fire regimes in dry coniferous forests of the Inland Pacific Northwest in eastern Washington. These ecosystems are dominated by Pinus ponderosa (Ponderosa pine) and Pseudotsuga menziesii (Douglas-fir), and have been characterized by frequent, low-severity surface fires in the past. I specialize in the application of GIS to explore the spatio-temporal variability of fire in these forests.

Teaching: I will be the teaching assistant for GEOG350 - Introduction to Geographic Information Science, in fall 2004.
