New Student Advising
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM, Wednesday 216 White Hall
Following the welcome, the graduate committee will meet with each new student individually to arrange your fall class schedule. A list of students and appointment times will be posted outside Room 216 White Hall. This will take the rest of the morning, so please plan to have most of this day free. You may want to bring a book or something to read while you wait for your turn in meeting with the graduate committee. After you have met with the graduate committee, you will then need to register for your classes.
(expect an invitation in the mail from Jeremy Tensen and the Geography Graduate Student Group).
Other Details
Before or After the Wednesday Morning Advising Session
Once you get to the Department (either before or after the meeting on August 16), make sure you do the following:
1. Sign out a building key from Hope Stewart in room 425. MI-3A key opens grad offices, classrooms, and the building's front doors.
2. Also from Hope, get two codes for the copiers: teaching (if you are a GTA) and personal.
3. When you have a local Morgantown address, be sure to give it to Hope Stewart (room 425).
4. Be sure to register for classes on August 17, 18 or 19, i.e. BEFORE classes start on August 22, as otherwise you will be assessed late fees.
STAR Registration
To get information on the specific classes offered this fall you can go on-line:
http://www.arc.wvu.edu/courses/
Choose “Fall”, "All offered Courses" (don't just select available, we can often get you into courses that are already full), and then “Geography.”
Courses for graduate credit are level 400 and higher. Classes at the 600 level are only open to graduate students.
Mail Boxes
Mail boxes are located near the main office (room 425). Your adress will be: Department of Geology & Geography, Box 6300, West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV 26506.
Email
Your e-mail address (on the university's MIX system) will be XXXXXXXX@mix.wvu.edu where the Xs are first initial and whatever part of your last name can be fit in 7 characters. If there is another John Doe on campus, your address might be jdoe2@mix.wvu.edu. This is also your log-in username on MIX. The default password for all accounts is 6 digits: two digits for the day of your birth and the last four digits of your WVU ID. Ex: if your birthday is 05/03/1974 and your WVU ID is 700-456-789, then your default password is 036789. You can read all about the MIX system at http://www.wvu.edu/~mix/. You can also log onto MIX and change your password.
If you are a GTA:
See Donna Titus in room 425 for a personnel form (so that you can be paid). Bring your Social Security card (not just the number) and driver's license. You must also have a bank checking account for direct deposit of paychecks. Unfortunately, because of University bureaucracy, your first check will not come until mid-September. |
