Geology Undergraduate Degree Requirements

Geology BS Candidates must fulfill all University and College Requirements

  • 128 credit hours completed
  • 12 hours each in Cluster A, B, C (note specific rules)
  • Foreign/Minority/Gender and International Requirements

BS Degrees do not require a foreign language

Required Geology Courses (most have a laboratory and include one or more field trips)

  • Geology 101 Planet Earth
  • Geology 102 Planet Earth Lab
  • Geology 103 Earth through Time
  • Geology 104 Earth through Time Lab
  • Geology 284 Mineralogy
  • Geology 285 Petrology
  • Geology 321 Geomorphology
  • Geology 331 Paleontology or Geology 454 Exploration Geophysics
  • Geology 341 Structural Geology
  • Geology 311 Stratigraphy and Sedimentation
  • Geology 463 Introduction to Groundwater Hydrology
  • Geology 404 Geology Field Camp
  • Plus upper division Geology Electives to add to 40 hours of Geology (may include Geol 201 if taken before Geol 341)

  • Chemistry 112 Survey of Chemistry or Chemistry 116 Fundamentals of Chemistry
  • Physics 101 Introductory Physics or Physics 111 General Physics
  • Physics 102 Introductory Physics or Physics 112 General Physics
Before graduating with a B.S. degree in Geology each student will be asked to complete a geology assessment test on which he/she must achieve a score of at least 60% before graduating.  This is a part of the Geology Program's approved assessment process.
