Geography Undergraduate Degree Requirements

How to become a Geography Major.

Get your advising file from your current advisor and take it to Rose Eavanson in Room 221 Armstrong Hall.

She will approve you to be in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences and will forward your application to us. There is nothing more you need to do.

UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS

General Education Curriculum (GEC) Policies

1. Minimum number of GEC credits - 41; maximum number - 43.

2. Total number of credits satisfying Objectives 2 - 9 that may be taken in the major field - 9.

3. Maximum number of courses taken in one discipline outside the major to fulfill GEC - 2.

4. Maximum number of Objectives to be satisfied by one course - 1 (Note: while most courses will satisfy two Objectives, the student will choose which of those Objectives that course will satisfy. In the interest of promoting a breadth of study, no course may satisfy more than one Objective.)

5. Courses satisfying Objectives 2 - 9 may also satisfy a course requirement for the major.


 

Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Requirement

1. 12 Hours Foreign Language

All 12 hours must be the same language.


 

Geography Program Requirements

Thirty-three (33) geography hours are needed for graduation. Forty-two hours (42) of geography, or any other university subject, is the maximum applicable toward the one-hundred twenty-eight (128) total hours needed for graduation. Geog 199 and Geog 491 courses are not counted against the maximum hours in Geography.

Note: Senior Thesis should be taken AFTER completion of other requirements or the last fall semester at WVU. Geography majors with a 3.5 or greater GPA may substitute GEOG 491 (Professional Field Experience), GEOG 495 (Independent Study), or GEOG 499 (Honors Thesis) for Capstone credit with approval of the student’s undergraduate advisor and the Geography Undergraduate Committee.
