Research Opportunities

Our graduate students receive financial support either as Teaching Assistants (TAs) or Research Assistants (RAs). Half-time stipends are competitive with our peer institutions: $13,350 per year (M.S.) or $15,750 (Ph.D.), plus a full-time tuition waiver (up to 12 credit hours per semester). The value of the stipend plus fee waiver is $29,118 for out-of-state M.S. students and $31,538 for Ph.D.  Research Assistants participate in faculty research funded by NSF, DOE, USGS, other government institutions and by industry.
As examples, in 2008 students participated funded projects such as:
  • Geophysical and Hydrogeological Assessment of Pilot Carbon Sequestration Sites (Dr. Rauch and Wilson).
  • Fracture Modeling and Reservoir Simulation of Teapot Dome, WY (Dr. Wilson).
  • 24-hour Chemical Changes in Water Chemistry of Mining-Impacted Creeks (Dr. Vesper).
  • Tectonics of Northeastern Russia (Dr. Toro).
  • Timing of Proterozoic Metamorphism in Northern Idaho (Dr. Lang).
  • Hydrogeology and mine flooding of the Pittsburgh seam (Dr. Donovan)
  • Evolutionary success in marine invertebrates (Dr. Kammer)
  • Appalachian Basin Marcellus Shale Resource Study (Dr. Carr).
  • LiDAR-Based Surficial Mapping and Watershed Restoration in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia (Dr. Kite).
