Dr. Wilson is an applied geophysicist with interests in carbon sequestration, and reservoir characterization. Recent funded geophysical studies include geophysical assessment of pilot carbon sequestration sites in New Mexico (San Juan Basin), West Virginia (Marshall Co.), and Michigan Basin (3D Seismic and PFC tracer study). Students currently conducting research with Dr. Wilson are involved in NETL sponsored multidisciplinary studies on active pilot sites. These studies incorporate analysis of 3D seismic, vertical seismic profiling, log analysis remote sensing, and regional subsurface data compilations for detailed reservoir characterization and regional assessment of carbon sequestration potential. Dr. Wilson also maintains an active interest and participation in non-linear fractal/multifractal studies of earthquake and seismotectonic systems and the interrelationships between variables used to characterize these systems.
Research funding at the MS and PhD level may be available for students interested in subsurface characterization of carbon sequestration pilot sites. These studies include diverse studies including seismic interpretation, ground penetrating radar surveys, regional and local log interpretations, remote sensing, etc. Admitted students often receive initial funding through teaching assistantships with opportunities to enter research assistantships in the second or third semester of their studies.
Student Opportunity: I am currently looking for a graduating senior currently enrolled in the department going on for the masters or a first year MS student currently enrolled in the department. The effort involves compilation of subsurface and surface data over the SECARB Russell Co., Virginia carbon sequestration pilot and integration of that data into the analysis of NETL PFC tracer and soil gas monitoring efforts at the site. This effort would provide summer funding at the approximate level of $1500 to $2000 per month depending on qualifications. This project is funded through the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). If you are interested, please send e-mail.
