The M.S. in Geology provides students
with cutting-edge training in the theory and application of geological science.
This degree program has two tracks: professional and research.
Students are required to take courses
specified by their advisory committee, with whom they meet at the beginning of
each semester. Learn more about coursework and degree requirements in the WVU

Professional Track
Our professional track is for working
professionals seeking an advanced degree, students who want an efficient but
productive one-year M.S. degree or professionals desiring to move into a geology
field. The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of working
geologists and features a flexible curriculum. Earn your degree in an
intensive 12- to 15-month program, or complete the degree part-time over
several years.
This is a nontraditional M.S. program
that focuses on career development instead of independent research.
Looking to change your career path or trajectory? Consider joining our
community of professionals and researchers.
Research Track
The research track prepares you for a
career as a professional geologist or as an independent researcher. Students
considering a future Ph.D. or employment in geological research are encouraged
to choose this track. Research is accomplished with specialized mentoring from
faculty with expertise spanning the geology program’s key areas of
specialization: Earth’s systems interactions, energy resources, environmental
geology and geochemistry, and planetary geoscience. Our program welcomes
independent thinkers who want to learn, explore and address critical societal,
environmental and economic issues.
